Something We Can Do - Send Kids to Camp

Nov 15, 2023

Dear Hurley Family,

Now’s a horrible time. Fear and hate drive politics, here and elsewhere. Some justify themselves by believing they’re protecting civilization. With that at stake, anything goes. Provocation replaces compromise. Revenge now is more important than the future and alternative facts are invented.

And what are we to do? By ourselves, each of us can’t do much. Together, we can do more.

We know what’s in the news isn’t the whole story.

However briefly, we’ve lived in another milieu. Even three weeks of sanity, each summer, is enough to affect us for the rest of our lives.

-   three weeks of being allowed to be ourselves, not someone else’s ideal.

-    three weeks of safety during which stranger doesn’t mean danger.

-    three weeks in which you can try something new without having to be great at it.

-    three weeks of not being regimented by bells or whistles.

-    three weeks of not being told you’re good because you’re on the good team while the other is bad.

-    three weeks of knowing that if your parents send you treats, you’ll be expected to share them with everyone else in your bunk.

Even three weeks of sanity each summer can matter a lot.

Last summer the Hurley Camp Fund sent four kids to camp, kids whose parents couldn’t afford it.

We want to do it again and again. So, please join us.

Together we can send kids to camp and make them aware that life can be better than what’s in the news.

With our best wishes for this Thanksgiving and the coming holidays,

Judi Bernstein-Baker, Larry Budner, Alan Glotzer, Marshall Harth,

Kathy Wang Seward, Lowell Waxman, Alan Wolsky

Greetings to all from the founders of The Hurley Camp Fund.  We are a group of about 100 people who initiated this fund in 1991, and who are bound by a single experience:  time spent, and memories closely held, by our time in Camp Hurley in the 1950s and 1960s.  We have one purpose - to raise money for scholarships to send children ages 8-15 years old to camp so that they may enjoy a similar, life changing experience.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR YOUR DONATION
